Betty Lou Fleckenstein, 90, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2024, at the Woodlands Retirement Community. Betty was born December 30, 1933 in Norfolk, VA to Esther Mullens Witzel. She was married to Leo John Fleckenstein for nearly 63 years. Betty graduated from St Mary’s School of Nursing in 1954, after which she spent several years working as a surgical nurse in the operating room. After the birth of their first child, Betty became a stay at home mother, raising five sons. After the boys were grown and had left the family home, Betty went back to work as a nurse for Autism Services for several years. She was very active in the West Virginia Dental Auxiliary and the Parent Teacher’s Organization at Our Lady of Fatima Parish School. After retirement, Betty often volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital. Betty’s hobbies included spending time with family and friends, traveling, running, tennis, and golf. She was a fan of Marshall University Athletics, rarely missing a home football game. Betty was preceded in death by her mother, her stepfather, Basil Thompson, and her husband. She is survived by her 5 sons James (Jaquelyn), Leo (Stephanie), Charles (Angela), David (Laura), and Kurt (Susan); her 2 sisters, Clara Sue Canterbury (Ted) and Carolyn Clemmitt (Paul); and 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Funeral Liturgy will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church; Rite of Committal at Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. prior to Liturgy. The family would like to thank the staff at Woodlands Retirement Community for their excellent care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Huntington, WV.
