Brian Scott Skeens, aged 54, of Ceredo, WV passed away on January 1, 2025 after a long medical battle. Brian was born on October 28, 1970, and was adopted by John and Anna Skeens on November 5, 1970. Anna wrote in Brian's adoption book, “It was the happiest night of my and your dad’s life”. Brian has been reunited with his loving mother, Anna Skeens, in death. Brian is survived by his beloved wife Kerry Skeens, John Skeens (Father), Gregg Skeens (Brother), and Jocie Skeens (Niece). Brian was a graduate of Ceredo-Kenova High school class of 1988. Brian was the vehicle for many talents throughout his life. He manifested a deep affinity for all things music. At an early age, Brian was introduced to the piano by his Aunt Judy. His talent and love for music grew, including learning to play guitar and other instruments. Brian played music for friends and family often, creating memorable nights of singing and a magical experience for all that had the honor of listening to him play. To say that Brian liked to read would be an understatement; Brian devoured the written word. He would read books, then channel his knowledge into his poems and short stories. Within the heart of Brian was a great poet. It delighted him to share his prolific writing and poetic masterpieces with the world. Brian was often recommending reading lists and encouraging others to express themselves through the written word. It was known that Brian struggled with mental illness for many years. He fought the demons of his mind on a daily basis, and his ability to persevere amongst such darkness was an admirable quality. Brian was an advocate for others struggling with mental illness. He would call on his own experience of fighting demons to encourage others to do the same. Unfortunately, over time the demons became too strong for him too endure.
The best way to remember Brian is to read one of his poems:
I’d like to weep a tear or ten
If only to unleash my manacled mind-
But I try and try, again and again,
And nolo lacrimosae can I find.
I know that tomorrow all of this will lie stone dead.
The sharpest scythe words have been uttered and have cleft;
I’d smile if just a single tear could be shed, but now I find I don’t have any left.
