Colonel Roger Dale Griffin (Ret)

Colonel Roger D. Griffin (Ret), 74, of Huntington, WV, passed away on Monday, December 25, 2023 at his residence.

He was born on March 11, 1949 in Tifton, Georgia the son of the late Nelson Pleamon Griffin Sr. and Wilma Nell Revels Griffin. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother and sister,  Nelson Griffin, Jr. and Cathy Carson.

He is survived by his wife, Paula Solar and brother, J.D. Griffin.


Roger was a Registered Nurse with the Department of Veterans Affairs with 32 years of service. He received his AND from Abraham Baldwin College 1969, BSN from the Medical College of Georgia 1973 and his MSN from the Medical College of Georgia in 1975.  He was a Registered Nurse in Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia. He served as a nurse and nursing instructor from 1969-1975. He was a Nurse Anesthetist. Served as Special assistant to Chief Nurse, VA Medical Center, Iowa, Associate Chief Nurse, VA Medical Center, Nashville, TN., Associate Chief Nurse, VA Medical Center, Kerrville, TX, Associate Chief Nurse, VA Medical Center, Huntington, WV and Clinical Assistant to Chief, Medical Service, VA Hospital, and Huntington, WV. He served as a clinical assistant professor at Marshall University School of Nursing, Bellarmine College Nursing School, Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine and Clinical Instructor of Medicine, Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University.


Roger was also a Retired Colonel with the US Army Reserve having attained the rank of Colonel serving from 1976 until his retirement in 2009. He served with the 830 Station Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa, 377 Combat Support Hospital, Chattanooga, TN, 94th General Hospital, and San Antonio, TX, HG 2291st USA Hospital, 810th Convalescent Center, and Lexington, KY. In 1989 he was assigned to the 302nd Field Hospital, Huntington, WV and in 1996 he was assigned to Womack Army Medical Center, Ft. Bragg, NC and in 1999 was assigned as the Drilling Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the Chief Nurse, US Army Forces Command at Ft. McPherson, Ga where he served until his retirement.


He was the recipient of the The Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Commendation with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Silver Hourglass Device and the Army service Ribbon. Colonel Griffin is also the Recipient of the Order of Military Medical Merit.
