Dr. Judith Stout Hood, MD, 92, passed away at Heartland of Riverview on May 26, 2018. Judy was born in the Shantung Province of China to Dr. William W. and Harriet Campbell Stout on January 22, 1926. Returning to the U.S. as a toddler, she grew up in Georgetown, KY. An exceptional student, Judy graduated from Garth High School, attended Georgetown College for 2 years, then transferred to the University of Louisville studying chemistry and earning a Doctorate in Medicine in 1952. A true pioneer of women in the medical profession, she was one of only five females and she served as Secretary of her graduating class. Upon completion of her internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington, she served as a health officer in KY, traveling to all 120 counties. As a scholarship recipient, she pursued her passion for serving people and helping them achieve good health, by earning a Masters in Public Health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Returning to KY, she worked for the State Health Department in Maternal and Child Health. In June 1961, she married Hugh L. Hood, also from Georgetown. She and her husband, a State Auditor, moved to Murray, KY where she became the physician for Student Health Services at Murray State University. She continued to serve students as director of student health at Auburn University in Auburn, AL. Always appreciative of Kentucky’s beauty and her roots, she returned to work at Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, KY retiring in 1991. Upon retirement she and Hugh enjoyed fun, active time’s together and visiting family and friends. They spent winters in Orange Beach, AL and Sun City Center, FL. After Hugh’s passing in 1998, she moved to St. Andrews Retirement Community, Richmond, KY. A lifelong fan of college basketball and football, she especially enjoyed cheering for the University of Kentucky. Judy enjoyed playing a variety of games, from bridge to corn hole. In addition to her husband and parents, Judy was preceded in death by brothers John and William, and sisters Margaret Stout, Mary Jones and Beth Claxon. She is survived by a daughter, Beth Neighborgall (C.R.), grandsons Quentin and Campbell of Huntington, WV, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will held on Thursday, May 31 from 6-7 pm at Reger Funeral Home a Celebration of Life service will follow at 7:00 pm at the Reger Funeral Chapel.
