Granville Preston Hamm

Granville Preston Hamm, 90, who resided with his daughter and Son-in-law Sarah and Dean Akers of Catlettsburg, formerly of Kenova died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at the Community Hospice of Ashland. He was born January 22, 1919 in Rowan County Kentucky a son to the late Robert Preston and Sarah Emma (Hyatt) Hamm. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Tennie Gue Hamm. He is survived by his 7 children Junior Hamm, Diane Arnett, Ernie Hamm, Sarah Akers, Kathy LeMaster, Mary Sue Bailey, and Robert Hamm, along with 23 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include a brother, Oval Hamm, and two sisters, Dorothy Cox and Essie Gue Smith. Mr. Hamm was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Lorren Hamm, Arvil Glenn Hamm, and Elmer Hamm, along with 2 sisters, Maggie Elswick and Anna Myrtle Scroggins. He was a member of the Catlettsburg Church of God and was a retired Custodian of 30 years at the First Baptist Church of Kenova. Mr. Hamm proudly served his Country in the U.S. Army during World War II and spent 7 months and 3 days as a POW at the Stalog 7A Camp in Mooseburg Germany. He received the Purple Heart metal, Good Conduct metal, and the Marksman metal. Mr. Hamm is also a member of the Kenova American Legion Post 93. Funeral services will be conducted at 1pm Friday, March 20, 2009 at the Catlettsburg Church of God with Bishop Steve Mays and Tom Mullins officiating. Burial will follow in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Kenova. Visitation will be from 6-9pm Thursday at the Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home.
