James Ellsworth Hineman

December 7, 1938 — February 8, 2023

James “Jim” Ellsworth Hineman, of Huntington, died Feb. 8, 2023, at his Vinton Street home. He was 84 years old.

He was born in Huntington on Dec. 7, 1938, and was one of three children. He graduated from Huntington East High School.

Jim met his late wife Linda in 1958 while she was visiting family in Huntington. After a short courtship, the two wed the following year in Chapmanville. They were married for 54 years and had two children. Jim joined the U.S. Air Force in 1961 and served in Great Falls, Mont., where he and Linda had their first son Rick. While in the Air Force, he worked on the McDonnell F-101 Voodoo jet as a radar technician. The couple returned to Huntington after four years out West and settled into their home on Vinton Street, where they lived the rest of their days. After returning to Huntington, they had their second son Michael. Jim was a retired member of IBEW Local 317 and worked as a journeyman electrician for over 30 years in the Huntington area. He served on the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee. He was a coach and manager in the local Little League team in the ‘70s when his sons were players; the team went on to win a district championship in 1979. The team couldn’t play at night, so Jim organized the donation and installation of field lights, making evening games and practices possible. Jim never lost his fascination with airplanes after leaving the Air Force. He was a model plane enthusiast and spent hours tinkering away on intricate details in his basement. He paid meticulous detail to his models and was a member of a remote control airplane club in Cannonsburg, Ky. Those who knew Jim knew his love of snacks – he sometimes ate more snacks than meals. He earned the nickname of “Reese Cup” on electrical jobs because of his fondness of peanut butter and chocolate. After the death of Linda in 2013, Jim discovered a love of camping and spent summers fishing on River’s Edge Campground in Glenwood with his son Rick. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior two days before his death. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Curtis Elwood Hineman and Helen Uda (Church) Hineman; siblings Betty Jo (Hineman) Hensley and Jerry Lee Hineman; wife Linda Jean (Conley) Hineman; and grandson Joshua Dallas Hineman. He is survived by son Rick Hineman of Huntington; son Michael Hineman (Stacie) of Port St. Lucie, Fl.; granddaughter Brinley Hineman of Brooklyn, Ny.; and granddaughter Chandler Hineman of Orlando, Fl. Family visitation will be held 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, followed by general visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Reger Funeral Home in Huntington. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. followed by burial at Crook Cemetery, Huntington. Condolences may be made to the family at www.regerfh.com.
