Lois Jane Frampton "Tillie" Goode

Lois Jane Frampton Goode (“Tillie”), 89, of Huntington, West Virginia, passed peacefully on August 20, 2013. Tillie is the adored wife and was the fearless navigator of James Jefferson Goode. She is the sainted mother of four, grandmother of eight, and great-grandmother of nine. Preceded in death were her parents architect William Ray Frampton & angel Erma Estelle (Bowser) Frampton; son-in-law Stephen A. Hunter; brother-in-law Claude H. Messinger; and brother, William B. Frampton. Tillie was born in Dr. Moore’s office across the street from Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Huntington on July 10, 1924. She was educated at Emmons Grade School, Enslow Junior, Huntington High, and graduated from Marshall College in 1944 with her BA in Physical Education. Tillie met Jim Goode at the old MU Student Union and their first date was to Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, which was, and always would be, the spiritual and social center of her life. Growing up Tillie experienced the Great Depression, the Great Flood, and the Great War, yet her optimism filled every room and she saw only the goodness in everyone she met. She touched many young lives as a teacher in New Boston, Ohio and Pineville, West Virginia, and as a church youth counselor and camp counselor. Tillie and Jim began their sixty-five year adventure when they were married by Rev. Cox at Fifth Avenue Baptist on September 3, 1948 with attendants Maybelle Frampton Messinger, Sarah Cox, Rachel Nunley Meadows, Agnes Woods, and Janice Callaway Frampton. Their four children, all born within 57 months, were raised by Tillie at the same kitchen table and shepherded into the same church pew, yet she saw each as a unique personality to encourage and nurture down his or her own varied and independent path. Tillie was an all-around athlete, forty years before Title IX, and never gave a second thought to being a “tomboy. Perhaps her toughest tennis opponent was Alice Marble (18 Grand Slams). She loved watching and listening to the Cincinnati Reds and all of the Thundering Herd games (football, and men’s and women’s basketball). Tillie’s rare outbursts of frustration were directed toward the calls made by umpires and referees. She remained the undefeated Ping-Pong champion of the Frampton/Messinger/Goode annual Thanksgiving gatherings. Tillie was a descendant of several Patriots of the American Revolution (Frampton, Wolfe, Bowser) and was a member of the Captain William Buford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Wayne County Genealogical & Historical Society. She guided husband Jim through decades of genealogical explorations into Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Virginia courthouses, cemeteries, and society meetings as well as trips overseas. Her travel schedule was lightened immensely by Jim’s access to Ancestry.com, though Tillie never touched a computer. In addition to being survived by her husband, Tillie leaves on God’s earth her dear sister, Maybelle Frampton Messinger (brother-in-law Claude, deceased), wonderful sister-in-law,Janice Callaway Frampton (brother Bill, deceased), children, Nancy Jane Chaffin (Roger), Sarah Elizabeth Hunter (son-in-law Stephen, deceased), James Lee Goode (Patricia Kerwin) and William Boyd Goode (Louise Crum), 8 grandchildren and their spouses, 9 great-grandchildren, 5 nieces and 2 nephews, her dear friends in the Friendship/Couples Sunday School class, and the many friends she made along her loving journey. The visitation will be 12 to 1 pm, Friday, August 23, 2013 in the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church Chapel, followed by the service at 1 pm. Burial will be at the Forest Lawn Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Reger Funeral Home.
