Marcella Gleason Corkrean, was born in Ashland, KY, November 1, 1930, the daughter of Margaret Bonfield and John William Gleason. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years Philip B. Corkrean, five sisters and two brothers, Anna Nell Sagraves, Margaret “Louise” Johnston, Esther Brislin, Mary Clifford, Patricia Alderman, William Gleason and Eugene Gleason. She died peacefully in her sleep August 5, 2024 at Woodlands Retirement Community, Huntington, WV.
She retired from Verizon (formerly C&P Telephone Co.) as District manager of Business Services with 33 years of service. Marcella was a devout Catholic and longtime member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, and a Life member of St. Mary’s Auxiliary, retiring as a volunteer in Surgery Waiting after 28 years. Marcella also volunteered as a Big Sister for the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America. Marcella was a devoted wife and dedicated to her family. She had a spark for life and enjoyed travelling with Phil. Two of their favorite places they visited were Hawaii and Ireland. They also enjoyed attending Marshall football games and Keeneland horse races.
Marcella was a loving, generous woman filled with faith that sustained her throughout her life. She never lost interest in the lives of her family and friends. Those left behind cherishing her memory are her 3 stepchildren, Carla (Vince) Stricker of Charleston, WV, Barbara Corkrean of Portland, OR, and Philip (Katherine) Corkrean of Riverview, FL; 6 grandchildren, Dr. Bethany (Bryan) Woomer Mierke, Dr. Katie (Michael) Stricker Mallory, Vincent Stricker, Sean Stricker, Philip Christopher Corkrean, Ryan Corkrean; and great granddaughter Marlo Mierke. She is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. A special thanks to her niece Kathy Leonard for her tireless devotion to navigating Marcella’s medical care. The family would also like to thank the staff of Woodlands Retirement Community, especially the health care staff who provided not only excellent care of Marcella but friendship as well.
Visitation will be August 10th, 2024 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church by Monsignor Dean Borgmeyer. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Rite of Committal will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington. The funeral will be livestreamed on the Reger Funeral Home website, www.regerfh.com, where condolences may also be sent to the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or a charity of your choice. Reger Funeral Home, Huntington, is assisting the family with arrangements.
