Matthew Stephen Greene

September 16, 1974 — January 26, 2024

Friday, January 26, 2024, Matthew Stephen Greene finally won the long race at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House and is now rejoicing in heaven. He was born September 16, 1974 in Huntington, WV. He graduated from Vinson High School where he played football and baseball for the Tigers. He spent many years in the restaurant industry and worked in landscaping prior to his cancer diagnosis. Matt was a member of Crosspoint Community Church. He dedicated many years, using coaching as his mission field, in the Vinson community. He coached football, baseball, basketball, and softball. Matt served on the League One Baseball Board for several years and along with his wife Shannon ran the Vinson Youth Basketball League for 10 plus years.

Matthew Greene was preceded in death by his father Stephen Greene, grandparents Jim and Lovevona Greene, Lige and Bessie Smith, uncles Larry Glen Smith, Roger Gene Smith and Rick Greene.

Matthew Greene is survived by his devoted wife Shannon, his precious children Jackson (son) and Macie (daughter), loving mother Deborah Greene, brother and sister-in-law Chad and Jennifer Wilkinson, niece Maddie, nephews Dante and Wyatt, dedicated mother-in-law Debbie Cole, an aunt Jackie Smith, many cousins, special extended family Steve, Susanne, and Sydney Cole, as well as a community full of “Gang Greene” supporters.

Matt had a love for music dating back to his younger years where he would play with friends. Later in life, Matt used his talents praising God in his church worship band. Matt was an avid writer, tattoo enthusiast, cornhole legend and enjoyed fishing. He found the most joy coaching his children and the youth of the Vinson community. Throughout his six-year battle with cancer, he faithfully continued coaching while modeling for his players how to not give up, stay strong in their Faith, and to suffer well.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Matthew S. Greene Scholarship Fund. The recipients will be a male and female that represent Matt’s love of sports, community service, high character, and Christian faith. Matthew S. Greene Scholarship Fund | Bold.org

Funeral services will be conducted by Eddie Gandy at 3:30 p.m. at Crosspoint Community Church on Saturday February 3rd, 2024. Family and friends may gather and celebrate his life from 1:00-3:30 p.m. before the service.

As much as Matt loved the Tigers, he was once quoted saying, “My journey extends much further than the orange and black.” Not only did Matt appreciate the support from his Vinson family but that of his extended community as well. Friends are encouraged to wear their favorite team colors to symbolize a combined effort of love for Matt and the communities that have supported him. Before every game Matt would encourage his players by saying “There are two things you can control out there, your attitude and effort. Now go play hard and don’t suck.” Reger Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
