Mr. William A. "Bill" Scaggs

January 14, 1923 — February 28, 2013

William (Bill) A. Scaggs, 90, of Daytona Beach, FL, formerly of Huntington, W.Va., passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2013, at Hospice of the Comforter in Altamonte Springs, FL. Bill was born and raised in Westmoreland, a son of the late Fletcher G. Sr., and Blanche Cornwell Scaggs. After the early death of his mother, he was raised and loved by his step-mother, Mae Bell Queen Scaggs. He is preceded in death by his wife, Kate Faye Browning Scaggs and brother Fletcher G. Scaggs, Jr. He is survived by two sons, Rev. David Allen Scaggs, Sr ( Candy) of Westport, IN, and William I. Scaggs of Altamonte Springs, FL., two grandsons David Allen Scaggs, Jr.( Jenny) of Hendersonville, TN, and Robert Garrett Scaggs (Allysa) of Westport, IN; and also three great-grandchildren, Mason Scaggs of Hendersonville, TN, Drake and Katie Scaggs of Westport, IN. Bill retired from Houdaille Industries in Huntington, and is a member of the First Baptist Church of Port Orange, FL. He was a member of VFW Post 1064, Mountaineer Chapter #37 of the 4th Marine Division, Crescent Lodge #32 as a 32nd degree mason, Huntington Scottish Rite, Beni Kedem Temple, and Eastern Star Marcum Chapter #61. Bill served in World War II 4th Marine Division as a Pharmacist Mate where he received two Bronze Stars and several other awards for meritorious service. Bill loved sports and was a semi-pro boxer while serving in the Military. He was the charter manager/coach of the VFW 1064 boxing team where he led several local boxers to fight in Madison Square Garden. His love of sports was also demonstrated by being a key organizer for the Westmoreland Little League football team, building the backdrop for Little League’s Smith Baseball field, and the key constructor for the lights at Vinson High School Football field. He organized the Daytona Beach Chapter of the West Virginia Club and remained active in the club. Bill enjoyed his retirement and being able to visit the beach, square dance, and visit with friends. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the acts of kindness given to Bill and family during his illness and passing. Special acknowledgements to loving friend Betty Hughes, and neighbors Andrea Miller; Dean & Angie Spletter, and Gary & AbbyGail Keappler. Friends may visit from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Sunday, March 3 at Reger Funeral Home and 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Monday, March 4. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 12:00 pm at the Reger Funeral Chapel with Rev. Patrick Elliott officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington, WV.
